Welcome to the Café Bistro Lissi Royal

Between 1870 and 1889, Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie, affectionately called Sissi or Lissi, resided several times at the Trauttmansdorff Castle in Merano/Meran. On the south side of the Alps, she found her well-being and inner peace during the cold winter months. The small spa town on the sunny side of the Alps owes its fame and rise to the status of an honourable spa resort to the young aristocrats. Many things still remind us of her visits to this day – such as the Café Bistro Lissi Royal, our homage to the beautiful Empress of Austria – her place for food and drink on the Merano/Meran “Kurpromenade”.

Anneliese Breitenberger

Your hostess at the Café Bistro Lissi Royal, Anneliese Breitenberger, has been regarded for decades as the grande dame of South Tyrolean folk music. Ever since her childhood, everything has revolved around music. Already at fourteen years of age, she was abroad performing with the former governor Silvius Magnago. Later, she also became internationally recognised. Through countless appearances as a singer and yodeller in radio and on television, performing at concerts and galas in almost all European countries, she has entertained many important personalities, such as Queen Elisabeth II of England, French President Charles de Gaulle, Pope John Paul II, US President Ronald Reagan, Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro, German Chancellor Helmut Schmid... One of the highlights was the performance for the last Empress Sissi – her friendship with the family still exists today. Anneliese Breitenberger was the initiator of the “Grand Prix of Folk Music”, which was the most important international competition in this music genre and served as a springboard for many artists up until 2010.
As hostess at Café Bistro Lissi Royal, Anneliese Breitenberger is always happy to surprise her guests with a musical treat ranging from traditional folk music to original Viennese music. The musical delicacy will of course be served live.

As the winner of the Tyrolean State Medal of Merit, South Tyrolean of the Year, and Grande Dame of South Tyrolean Folk Music – Anneliese Breitenberger is all this and your host at Café Bistro Lissi Royal.

The legend of the Kaiserschmarrn

A dish worthy of an empress – or perhaps not?

Legend has it that Empress Sissi wanted a delicious pancake for dessert. The court confectioner, however, had a mishap: he tore up the sweet dessert in the heat of the moment. At the sight of the tattered pastry, Sissi asked: “What kind of sloppy mess (Schmarrn) is this?” The desperate confectioner, in his distress, prepared the dish with lots of icing sugar and raisins and said: “Well, give this empress her mess (Schmarrn)!”

And so it was born, the legendary Kaiserschmarrn.
